Excellent sound reproduction across movies & music

This is a nice sounding soundbar with a number of connectivity features to make it worth buying. Turn up the volume using the Smart sound mode to feel the bass but don’t expect to compare with similar sized setups with a sub-woofer. If you need wall shaking bass, get the matching sub-woofer. Using it with a Samsung TV, PS4 and Cable box.

Great at turning off randomly on it’s own.

I’ve been fighting with this for just over a year. Now that it’s paid for, it’s going into the trash. For the last year it had been a case of randomly turning off whenever it feels like. Not the programmed ‘There’s no sound for a while, so I’ll save power.’ It’s the ‘someone’is in the middle of watching a movie/TV show/song and I don’t want to work.’. I won’t have another Samsung product in my house with the compete lack of support provided by this company. Complete waste of money and time.

Works fine with some minor issues

I was interested in this product because I didn’t want a large subwoofer hoggig up floorspace and I didn’t have the need to be blasted out of the room with bass. It seemed to be a good choice. I guess what sound mode you should choose might depend on the dvd or bluray that you are watching because I HAVE noticed a difference between movies. That said, I got pretty tired of playing with different modes for each movie and trying to second guess what I should select, so for the most part I just stick with the smart mode, although there are times when something else might be better.

The soundbar is connected to a Sony X900E and while I think the sound for the tv isn’t that bad (I’m not a raging audiophile…) the HW-MS650 does improve it. My issues? I hate the time lag before I hear sound upon start up – about 15 seconds. Most annoying is when the sound either quits on its own or when I change a channel, find that I need to adjust the sound level up or down (because it’s never consistent across broadcast tv) and the sound level is stuck in place. This happens about once, maybe twice in an evening. In that instance I need to turn the soundbar off and then back on again. That means that I will have the annoying 15 second delay again before I hear anything. I can’t recall this happening with dvd/bluray movies, just broadcast tv. When I first purchased the soundbar I hooked it up with the optical cable for a day, then bought a quality hdmi cable and connected it to the HDMI/ARC on the TV. I mentioned this issue to a salesman at Best Buy and he opined that it was most likely an ARC issue. (Whatever that means.) I’ve only seen a few references to this as an issue for anyone else. It’s irritating but I guess I’ll live with it. I have a rotten internet connection so if there’s a firmware fix… I’d be dead before it ever made it to the soundbar.

Overall, I’m satisfied. I didn’t want booming bass and I don’t have to deal with it. It has improved sound for movies and I’ve found that when bass is relevant to the movie, I get some without getting blasted around the room. Given that my wife wouldn’t tolerate that anyway, I’m fine with it. Voice is generally clear but again that might depend on what you are watching. I was very surprised to find that with some TV programs the sound was vastly improved… Gotham for example. When I tested the unit with music cd’s, I found that the Lord of the Rings music cd’s to be a good representation of sound.

    Great sound, poor auto-off feature

So, this gets 4 to 5 stars in the audio department. Its a great sounding speaker. Amazing for music, good for movies/tv, a surprisingly full sound (bass/mid/treble) for a sound bar. Some of this probably comes from the size. It’s a large bar. Heavy, wide, and thick. Much larger than soundbars I have had in the past, and a good 2x the size of the soundbar that replaced it (the newer N650). So, with such great sound, why replace it? This was used in the bedroom. The problem is that while we are watching TV (esp. the wife) there is often a lot of pausing to deal with the kids, or the million other reasons you pause a show. Normally you would think this isn’t a big deal. With this soundbar, it shuts off after 10 mins (there is no way to change this), and since there is no IR, so there is no way to turn it back on without standing up and hitting the power button. There are other options, you can turn the TV off and back on, use the app – which takes just as long to load and toggle the audio on the soundbar as standing up. To call this frustrating would be an understatement, and my wife actually wanted me to just return it. Instead I bought the newer Samsung N650, which doesn’t shutoff after 10 mins, and has IR built in, so you can turn it back on easily ever if it does, and I’ll be moving the MS650 to the porch, where it serves light duty as an audio device. Samsung could fix this with a firmware update, but doesn’t seem interested in doing so, as if you search the forums, auto-off has been a frustrating issue for many for a while.

The downside of replacing it, is that the N650 doesn’t sound quite as full as a standalone bar. It includes a subwoofer to make up for this, but if I were to do a direct side-by-side comparison between the two, I think the MS650 would actually slightly edge out the N650, and would significantly do so without the N650 subwoofer. The upside (other than getting a good SB for the porch, which I was going to buy anyway) is that the N650 does have more “presence”. With the MS650, the sound comes from the SB. The N650 also gives you the feeling of sound coming from around you. It doesn’t have the same impact as actual dedicated surround/height speakers, but it does add a bit to the immersion when watching movies and shows.

Final note, this is an amazing sounding bar for the prices you can find it for, however if this is for a location where you might be pausing the action often, I would buy a newer Samsung bar, either the N or Q line.

I bought them a month ago. Comcast set them up but I am unable to program them to my WiFi, or my Samsung SmartTV connection guide, get decent sound through my tv via streaming or standard tv programs. Tried getting in touch with Samsung Tech Support to come out. They called me once, I tried returning their call to no avail.

    Auto Power Down Function sucks

If I knew in advance that it has Auto Power Down Function that you can’t disabled – I wouldn’t buy it regardless of price or sound quality. The fact that I have to pay attention to what is actually producing sound (TV or soundbar) is ridiculous. You pause video and when you return Soundbar is turned off. It’s sad that I realized it so late and can’t return it back to the store. Only this simple “feature” makes it not wanting to recommend it (or any Samsung soundbar with this feature) to a friend.

    Amazing Sound!

This Sound bar is amazing! Love the sound and I am glad I don’t need stands, a big box at the corner. The sound is great, very loud, so I keep it on number 8 at night and no more than 14 durring the day. Sleek design and I love how the remote match the TV and Disc Player, just a little tiny longer, but thats how I know which one is what. Love it Love it, Planning on getting a new one for the Living room to Listen to music.

Sounds good, constantly displays connection issue

The soundbar works good, but it frequently asks if it can connect to the network through the tv, they were both Samsung and purchased on the same day. It is really annoying, and I wish I would have gone with a different soundbar because of it.
